Most of you are concerned about breaking foldable phones

February 22, 2020

Foldable phones are still a brand new product category and they’re already off to a rocky start. Every consumer-ready foldable that’s come to market so far has had at least one durability issue, whether it’s cold weather or gunk getting under the display.

Folding phones aren’t going away any time soon, so I asked our readers their thoughts on the subject. Are foldable phones in a bad spot already? Or is this a non-issue?

Are you concerned about foldable phone durability?

Results

I’m a bit surprised by these results. It turns out 56.3% of Android Authority readers are concerned about foldable phones being off to a bad start. Pair that with the 21.9% of readers who are conflicted on the subject, and you have a massive 78.2% of voters who have some type of negativity in regards to foldable phone durability.

Just 21.79% of voters aren’t nervous at all about foldables breaking due to faulty designs.

Here’s what you had to say

Here are some of the best comments from last week’s poll explaining why they voted the way that they did:

  • jimmy cychowski: Nope….. i am waiting for the Surface Duo! lol
  • DLS: Not concerned. I’m never going to buy one.
  • Jarrod: Yes and no. Yes because they b all have durability issues. No because I’ll never own the ugly hunks of crap.
  • blindexecutioner: I’m in the middle I guess. I’ll never own one so I don’t really have much of an opinion. They are not being tested very well though. Also, glass doesn’t fold. Samsung has people drinking the Kool-aid big time right now with those screens.
  • Bak Choi Kim: Won’t care its durability as long as the price is cheap enough… (Right now, it’s just a ripoff.)
  • DBS: I’m not more concerned because I think foldable smartphones simply don’t have a future. They solve no issue consumers have and the compromise they will always require – a fragile screen – is simply not solvable. There’s no such thing as foldable glass, no matter how hard marketing tries to convince people about it. You simply can’t change the laws of physics. So foldable screens will always be less resistant than glass screens.
Are people willing to make that trade of? I don’t think so.
  • Selso Ouiti: Nope. Duds happen.
  • Whatever5000: The Ultra Thin Glass was supposed to be a major upgrade so it will be a massive kick in the onions for Samsung if it is not just an isolated incident.

That’s it for this week. As always, thanks for voting, thanks for the comments, and don’t forget to let us know what you thought of the results below!
