GitHub is the number one code hosting platform for millions of developers around the world. The Microsoft-owned company provides developers with a plethora of tools and resources to get their projects off the ground. That’s even more apparent now, thanks to the platform’s newest addition: the GitHub app for smartphones.
Today, the company announced the official GitHub app’s stable release after several months of beta testing. The mobile app features a clean, straightforward UI, with all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a mobile version of the platform, including a “Browse code” option to read through the code and share links to various files.
Now, I’m no developer, so I can’t speak to the app’s workflow. But as far as looks are concerned, the GitHub app looks pretty clean. Navigating around feels intuitive and snappy, and there is even a built-in dark mode for those who prefer it.
The app touts a slew of features that promise to make you more productive while working on the go. However, it’s not meant to replace desktop GitHub.
It supports familiar swipe gesture functionality to save tasks and mark them as done. Users can talk to and collaborate with their teammates without needing to be at their computers. Also, merging pull requests is as simple as selecting each one and tapping a button.
