Electric Porsche Macan Coming in Late 2022, Followed By More EVs

March 21, 2020

Porsche expects to start production on an all-electric Macan at the end of 2022. That was confirmed by Michael Steiner, Porsche executive board member for Development. Speaking with German auto industry publication Automobilwoche, Steiner said Audi also will launch an electric car in the same segment.

“We are currently discussing whether a parallel launch of both cars makes sense, and are considering launching the electric Macan a few months later,” Steiner said about the Porsche and Audi EVs. “But that hasn’t been decided yet.”

Porsche’s timeline makes sense given what we already know. Porsche and Audi have been working on a new platform, codenamed PPE, that will underpin battery electric vehicles from about 2022 onwards. Porsche had confirmed the Macan will sit on this so-called Premium Platform Electric (PPE). We don’t know much else about the upcoming electric Macan, except that it will feature 800-volt charging technology like the Taycan, and it will be produced at the same Leipzig factory that makes the current, fossil-fuel-powered versions of the small crossover.

Plans are also underway for an all-electric Boxster and Cayman, Steiner confirms. “It’s our clear intention to electrify the Boxster/Cayman, but it hasn’t been finally decided on yet.” The electric Boxster and Cayman sports cars would sit on a different platform than the Macan’s PPE, he said. While the Porsche executive didn’t mention it, we suppose Tesla’s second-generation Roadster would be a prime target.

Besides the Macan, will there be other vehicles that sit on the PPE architecture? Steiner said that the platform is not limited to B-segment vehicles, or copies of an existing model series. It potentially can be applied to a larger C-segment crossover, he said, adding that no decisions have been made. Translated to our market’s size categories, that’d mean something like a mid-size luxury SUV (the Macan is, technically, a compact SUV). Either way, consider us excited for more electric Porsches—let’s just hope they turn out as thrilling as the Taycan.
