2019-2020 Volvos Recalled Due to Automatic Emergency Braking Issue

March 25, 2020

If you drive a new Volvo, then listen up. The Swedish brand is recalling every vehicle in its 2019-2020 lineup due to concerns over its automatic emergency braking system.

The feature may fail to detect obstacles and thus may not engage when needed, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Why? Because the older software in these vehicles isn’t compatible with the cars’ newer hardware. Owners looking for a fix will have to take their Volvo vehicle into the dealership for a free software upgrade. The recall is expected to begin on May 1, 2020.

The good news is that Volvo has yet to receive any reports of injuries, fatalities, or crashes related to the problem. Volvo has since introduced updated software into vehicles produced on, or after, March 11, 2020.

The recall affects every 2019-2020 model-year Volvo vehicle, including the S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, S90, V90, V90 Cross Country, XC40, XC60, and XC90. That’s a total of 121,605 vehicles in the United States, according to NHTSA.
