WATCH: A Land-Speed Record Car “Races” a Bugatti and an F1 Car

The Bloodhound LSR team, caretakers of the long-gestating effort to eclipse the 763-mph land-speed record using a jet-powered wheeled missile of the same name, released a really cool video that shows how its car stacks up against representations of a Formula 1 racer, a Bugatti Chiron, and a regular road car in regards to acceleration and top speed.

As the footage starts (4.4 seconds after the “race” begins, owing to drone stabilization), the Bloodhound LSR sits in last place, just behind the regular road car. Blame its jet engine, which needs a few moments to overcome inertia. Already, the Chiron and F1 car are both rocketing past 100 mph, illustrating just how staggeringly quick they are—and remember, the Chiron is street-legal.

As the race continues, the Bloodhound picks up steam, passing the regular car at the 5.4-second mark. The Bugatti, meanwhile, more or less keeps the Formula 1 car in its sights until the racer hits its 203-mph top speed. The Bloodhound, though, surges into the lead while traveling 283 mph just before the 19-second mark clicks by, ultimately rocketing into the distance and leaving the other cars in its literal dust. For its part, the Bugatti finally erases the F1 car’s lead at roughly the 29.1-second mark before topping out at 248 mph. That speed seems blistering until you realize that, by this point, the Bloodhound is going 625 mph.
