Google’s crazy Duplex AI calling service is coming to 3 more markets

Google IO 2019 duplex demo

Google’s Duplex calling functionality is one of the more impressive inventions we’ve seen, delivering an AI concierge that’s capable of arranging appointments for you over the phone. This functionality is currently available in the US only, although Google was conducting a pilot test of sorts in New Zealand.

Now, VentureBeat has uncovered updated Google Duplex support notes, revealing that the service is coming to Australia, Canada, and the UK in some capacity. The support page now lists phone numbers for Duplex in the aforementioned markets, having previously listed these numbers for New Zealand and the US only.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that a full-fledged Google Duplex service is rolling out in Australia, Canada, and the UK though. Google launched a limited version of the service in New Zealand earlier this year, and it was only used to verify operating hours of local businesses. So it’s entirely possible that people in the new markets won’t be able to ask Google to make an appointment for a haircut.

Nevertheless, a limited roll-out akin to New Zealand could help Google train Duplex in real-world scenarios ahead of a consumer-facing release in these markets.

You won’t need a Pixel device when Duplex eventually launches at large in your country, as it only requires an Android 5.0 phone with Assistant, Maps, and Search. It even works on iPhones that have Google Assistant installed.
