MediaTek announces Dimensity 1000 Plus processor

May 7, 2020

MediaTek 5G chipset.

The MediaTek Dimensity 1000 is the Taiwanese company’s first flagship processor in roughly two years, packing the latest and greatest CPU cores and integrated 5G.

It looks like MediaTek is following the Qualcomm route by officially launching a slightly upgraded chipset, dubbed the Dimensity 1000 Plus (much like the Snapdragon 855 Plus followed the 855).

The main difference between the new chip and the old one seems to be the addition of 144Hz refresh rate support. By comparison, the vanilla Dimensity 1000 supports 120Hz at FHD+ resolution or 90Hz at QHD+. The new chip also touts MediaTek’s UltraSave technology for more power-efficient 5G connectivity.

Otherwise, we’re assuming that the Dimensity 1000+ features the same octacore CPU (4x Cortex-A77 and 4x Cortex-A55) and Mali-G77 MP9 GPU as the standard Dimensity 1000. The firm is also touting a few other technologies, such as AI-powered picture quality adjustments, 5G+5G dual-SIM, and SDR to HDR conversion.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 vs MediaTek Dimensity 1000 specs: A rivalry renewed

Qualcomm is the king of the hill when it comes to flagship processors, as virtually all major manufacturers (with the exception of Huawei) use its Snapdragon 800 series in their top-end phones. After a lengthy absence …

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a Dimensity 1000 variant though, as the company quietly launched the Dimensity 1000L processor earlier this year. That variant stands out by offering a lower clock speed than the standard SoC.

We’ve contacted MediaTek for more information regarding the upgraded chipset and will update the article when they get back to us. Nevertheless, the firm’s website says the first devices with the Dimensity 1000+ are coming soon, while Iqoo is reportedly launching a device powered by the chipset. Either way, we hope to see more phones actually launching with Dimensity processors, as more competition in the SoC space is always a good thing.
