Why is the assumption that Sony’s console is going to be the expensive console? A GPU is more expensive than an SSD. A RX5700 has only 40 CU and it costs about $375 meanwhile a PCIe 4 1TB costs $199.
Now the Xbox has 56 CU so if we do our math that’s $9.375 per CU which means the price of 56 CU’s would be $525
Now we take the PS5’s 825GB SSD and we look at the price per GB 1000/$200 = $0.20 per GB so that = $164.175
The math cleanly shows that the SX very likely has a higher manufacturing cost.
(Below is not accurate number just an explanation of how PC parts are priced.)
And that doesn’t even go into the fact that if one CU was $10 two CU’s would be $21 three would be $32 because as you increase the complexity and number of transistors the manufacturing failure rate increases so pricing on cores and and CU ect isn’t a flat line it’s a curve.
And if Sony is buying 1TB SSD’s that had some of the flash chips fail during manufacturing and disabling those chips to reach 825GB they could be getting the SSD’s at a huge discount.
