Google Assistant smart displays will soon be able to show web pages

Your Google Assistant Smart Display will soon be able to access AMP web content. Google says the feature will be rolled out to Smart Displays this summer. It has also announced a bunch of major improvements to its core platform and development tools to help developers build new experiences for Google Assistant.

Accelerated Mobile Pages, which is a web component framework that started off as a rival to Facebook Instant Articles, allows developers to create web pages that are optimized for mobile devices and load much faster than regular web pages. While Smart Displays will only be able to access AMP compliant articles initially, Google will enable more web content categories later this year.

Another new feature that Google is working on for Smart Displays is called Home Storage. The feature will allow for a “communal storage solution,” enabling developers to save context for all individual users in a household. This will make it possible to save individual interactions with a Smart Display, such as the last saved point from a puzzle game.

The Media APIs have been updated as well and now support longer-form media sessions. Users can now resume playback of long-form content such as videos and podcasts across Assistant devices. Continuous Match Mode, which will begin rolling out in the next few months, will allow for a more fluid experience when interacting with the Google Assistant.
