The original Chicken Run was directed by Aardman founders Peter Lord and Nick Park, and told the story of a gang of chickens who attempt to escape from a farm before they are turned into chicken pies. The voicecast included Julia Sawalha, Mel Gibson, Miranda Richardson, Timothy Spall, and Imelda Staunton, and the movie grossed more than $225 million worldwide.
The new movie will directed by ParaNorman director Sam Fell, with a script from original writers Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell. Lord and Park will produce, and in a statement, Lord said, “We’ve got the perfect story, and the relationship with Netflix is kind of perfect as well because they celebrate the filmmaker and are so filmmaker friendly. I feel now we can make the Chicken Run sequel we want to, the one we really care about.”
Variety has some plot details. It states that the new movie will focus on Molly, the daughter of Rocky and Ginger from the original movie, who lives with her parents in a “human-free chicken paradise.” However, a threat from the mainline leads Ginger to “rally her troops and put their own hard-won freedom at risk for the good of all chicken-kind.”
The Chicken Run sequel doesn’t have a release yet, but it will go into production in 2021. For more, check out GameSpot’s guide to the biggest upcoming movies of 2020 and beyond.
