The concept of turning your car into a place to stay is far from a foreign one, and these days it seems like there are ever more options to choose from when it comes to creating the perfect home away from home. Some campers go way over the top and include stoves, counters, water tanks, and full-on beds. The roof-top tent from Autohome for the new 2020 Land Rover Defender is a much simpler way to camp in—or more accurately, on—your ride. Provided, of course, you own a new Defender, too.
Instead of a three tons worth of amenities—like the Scout Olympic camper we covered a few weeks ago—to keep you entertained while you’re out exploring, AutoHome only offers the promise of a mattress to sleep in and a roof over your head. The tent itself folds up and fits into a slim, lockable box to ensure that the tent doesn’t just fly away as you’re driving along. The whole contraption weighs just 141 pounds, too, so it won’t burden your Land Rover in the slightest.
The tent seems perfect for a whole host of use cases, too, not just camping. How many times have you been on a long road trip and thought, “I could really use a little nap right now.” Have at it! There also is the benefit of full, wraparound coverage to keep pesky mosquitos and other nuisances away. Plus, the tent sleeps two, so you and a passenger can roll cross-country without ever having to step foot in a hotel or other such lodging, because it’s right on top of you the entire time.
The Autohome tent’s caps are made of 100 percent fiberglass, and feature insulation so it stays relatively cool. It attaches to any roof rack via a set of four universal mounts, to installation is as simple as pulling out the toolbox and putting in a little elbow grease.
The only snag might be the fact that it’s currently on sale in Europe, and we aren’t sure if AutoHome will ship it to the states. That said, if you’re intrigued by this sleek sleeper, it’ll cost you the spicy end of $4,300. That might sound sound like a lot, but if you’re dropping $70,000 on the new Defender, you might just want to think of it as a just another option on the spec sheet.
