Nissan Ariya Electric Crossover SUV to Debut on July 15

July 1, 2020

At last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan debuted a sleek electric crossover called the Ariya. Despite the way it looks, the crossover was already close to production-ready at the time. Now, Automotive News reports we’ll see the final product in July. Specifically, July 15.

When it debuted last October, the Ariya concept stood out for its slim headlights, three-dimensional grille pattern, chiseled body lines, low-slung roof, and modern rear light blade. It provides a glimpse into the future of Nissan’s overall design language. The styling is a toned-down interpretation of the earlier Nissan IMx concept. The name “Ariya” seems much more fitting for a new crossover; it dates back to ancient times, and Nissan said it evokes images of respect and admiration, as well as a sense of purpose.

The Ariya rides on Nissan’s new EV platform that will make its way to a number of the brand’s future vehicles. It’s unclear just how much output the crossover’s electric motor (or motors?) will make, but Nissan promises “sports-car-like performance.” For what it’s worth, the concept sported a pair of electric motors.

Inside, the Ariya takes a minimalist approach. Instead of a multitude of buttons and switches, the cabin relies on touchscreens. A flat floor, open footwell, and thin instrument panel give the interior an airy feel. Expect the Ariya to feature Nissan’s latest ProPilot driver-assist technology.

The electric crossover goes on sale in Japan first, before eventually making its way to the United States, Europe, and China.
