It was rough coming in 1, 1 1/2 years later in most markets and a counter advertising push. But the end justified the means. Even if it sold less than Sony’s previous consoles.
Free online over the whole generation was better than spending $500-$600 for a 10 year generation on online. But free was downplayed.
Full BC and not “popular picked BC” was better. But was downplayed. Even today, “popular picked” is not full BC. But Sony ended up removing it to reduce cost. Just to please those that couldn’t afford the system.
Sony didn’t win the generation in sales with PS3. But they won in future standard use. Blu-ray is used today and standard because not everyone has internet or good internet. And fits DLC and things like horse armor on a disc. Swappable HDDs without void of warranty is standard and not expensive proprietary HDDs and memory cards. Hdmi is standard and not component. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built in is standard. And although Wii won, Motion Control is dead. But that other controller given derogatory names that could be used for casual and core gameplay? The PS Move? Is STILL used today 10 years later for PSVR in the latest games like Iron Man VR and TWD Saints and Sinners. And will still be compatible on PS5 for PSVR 1.
PS3 also showed all that investment in tech, in advanced game engines and in exclusives, ran over their competitors like a freight train with PS4. It’s called MARATHON. not SPRINT. Sony was thinking about the future. Like their SSD and IO in PS5.
Lastly, the Gamespot video never mentioned the $499 PS3. Only the $599 system to make the price difference look bad against Sony’s competitor. But PS3 did almost everything a gamer wanted for $100 more. They also don’t mention how Microsoft was involved in trying to profit off of Sony’s lawsuit with Immersion about rumble removal. That would be a great future article.
