2021 BMW X7 Dark Shadow Edition: Lights Out for Bimmer’s 523-HP SUV

BMW loves its special editions, and the company has rolled out some dark-themed schemes as of late, including the almost unseeable Vantablack X6 and the 8 Series Golden Thunder edition. But it seems the Munich-based automaker isn’t letting up, and it’s just taken the wraps off the BMW X7 Dark Shadow Edition.

Essentially, the Dark Shadow Edition is an eight-cylinder X7 M50i with a lot of blacked-out bits to give it a stealthier vibe. The paint, however, isn’t black. Wait, what? No, really—this special X7 is coated in matte Frozen Arctic Grey Metallic. Even though the color is an option in BMW’s Individual catalog, the company says this is its first SUV to wear the hue. In photos, it at least appears very close to black.

The mirror caps, window surround, roof rails, and massive grille are all (actually) blacked out and help set off the shadowy gray paint. The family hauler sits on 22-inch wheels painted Jett Black that help complete the sinister look.

Inside, the X7 gets special two-tone, Night Blue and Black seats and a Night Blue Alcantara headliner, while the dashboard and parts of the doors have additional splashes of Night Blue to liven things up a bit. The rest of the interior is mostly black, with the glossy piano-black plastic center-console trim bearing the words “Edition Dark Shadow.”

Being an appearance package, the Dark Shadow X7 brings no mechanical modifications. That means the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 still makes an entirely enjoyable 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque and the M Sport suspension remains unchanged. BMW says about 75 Dark Shadow models will make their way to the U.S., and interested parties can preorder one at this link along with placing a $1,000 refundable deposit. The Dark Shadow Edition X7 itself will cost $120,490 when those orders are fulfilled.
