When it comes to Samsung’s recent promise to support some of its devices with three generations of platform updates, there may be hope yet that policy will extend to more than just the company’s flagship phones.
If you haven’t been following the saga that is Samsung’s new software commitment, the short version is that the company caused a lot of confusion when it announced the policy at its Unpacked event earlier this month.
At first, it seemed devices as far back as the Galaxy S9 could get an extra year of support. However, the company later clarified only the S10, S20, Note 10, and Note 20 lineups are included in the policy currently. However, it seems now Samsung may extend its commitment to include additional in-market devices.

In a Korean-language support communication spotted by TizenHelp, a representative for the company told an A90 owner their device might get three years of platform updates. They said Samsung is currently deciding whether to extend the policy to include high-end A series and tablets released after the Galaxy S10. Once Samsung comes to a decision, it will share the news through its Samsung Members app. The upside of all this is that devices like the A90 and A81 could get Android 12 down the line.
However, if you own a Galaxy A phone, we suggest not getting too excited just yet. We’ve reached out to Samsung for comment on the support communication, and we’ll update this article when we hear back from the company.
