Overlanding and Off-Roading on Riding Lawnmowers Looks Fun

August 21, 2020

If it’s got a motor, somebody’s raced it. Or run it through the dirt. (Or both, right?) But a riding lawnmower? Sure, you remember Honda’s 133-mph lawnmower, right? If your mower project is not backed by a British Touring Car Championship racing team and the U.K. arm of a major corporation, though, you might want to set your sights lower. How about getting from point A to point B on a mower, sans roads?

Our friends at The Drive spotted an Instagram account of an outfit in Canada building lawnmowers to do just that. No, they’re not four-wheel drive dirt-manglers with a trio of lockers and a roof-top tent, but these off-road lawnmowers are cheap and fun. And that’s the sort of spirit and creativity we enjoy. Maybe not so much the tipping over, though, which OK Off-Road Mowers (OKOM) builds and adventures with. Looks like a laugh, and maybe a workout if pushing is required.

This isn’t the first time these two have hopped on machines wildly unsuited for the task. The Coleman minibikes used in Episode 63 were barely adequate—and that’s being charitable. But it did inspire the lawnmower adventure. And if lots of people are coming up with the same answer—a terrible lawnmower—to the question of what to screw around with off-road, well, maybe there’s something to it.

For less than the cost of an extra-large supreme pizza you would have bought at the local pizzeria that’s now delivery-only, you can subscribe to the MotorTrend App for an entire year and watch the amazing shows like the behind-the-scenes series NASCAR All-In: Battle for Daytona and tons of newly launched shows about cars and the automotive lifestyle. Plus, there’s all-you-can-eat of the past 20-plus seasons of Top Gear; if that’s not enough, crank up the A/C and check out the entire Roadkill Universe: Roadkill, Roadkill Garage, Engine Masters, Faster With Finnegan, and Roadkill’s Junkyard Gold. And coming soon—drumroll please—the brand-new season of Top Gear America, featuring Dax Shepard, Rob Corddry, and Jethro Bovingdon.
