2021 Volkswagen ID 4 Electric Crossover to Reach U.S. in Late 2020

Kicking off Volkswagen’s renewed electric vehicle offensive in the United States is the ID 4, a small crossover that will sit on a new dedicated EV platform. And it’ll be here before you know it, with the first U.S. deliveries scheduled to begin before the end of the year. Ahead of its arrival, VW is revealing a few more details on the ordering process.

Following in the footsteps of other electric vehicles, the Volkswagen ID 4 will be available for pre-order. Interested buyers will be able to make a fully refundable $100 deposit to get the process started. This reservation holds your spot in line to order one of these EVs. Another $400 deposit locks in your configuration with your preferred dealership, although this is ultimately refundable as well. You’ll be able to track your reservation every step of the way online.

Oddly enough, Volkswagen isn’t really aiming to steal Tesla’s piece of the pie. Instead, VW thinks the ID 4 will appeal to the likes of current RAV4 and CR-V drivers. The automaker aims to make electrification more accessible, and we hope the ID 4’s price reflects that goal. As we’ve said before, pricing for the model is likely to hover around $30,000—after a federal tax credit of $7,500. VW says that 99 percent of its dealer network so far has signed up for the ID 4, so expect to see the brand sell the EV crossover across the country.

The ID 4 will be imported from Europe first. Eventually, VW’s plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, will produce copies destined for the U.S. market. We’ll learn more details about the Volkswagen ID 4 next month.
