Activision, Treyarch, and Raven have finally revealed Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and it promises to be an intriguing game in more ways than one.
The history-based first-person shooter is due to launch on November 13 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One (more on next-generation launches in a moment), and represents a “direct sequel” to the original Black Ops that continues the Cold War drama. You join in during the early 1980s as you uncover the conspiracy of Perseus, a mysterious person who aims to “destabilize” the world. It’s based loosely on Yuri Bezmenov’s claims of a Soviet plan to infiltrate Western intelligence with an elite spy.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War revealed
The single-player campaign will take you to places ranging from Moscow and East Berlin through to Turkey and Vietnam. You’ll join familiar characters such as Hudson, Mason, and Woods, and wield an assortment of Cold War-era weapons.
The multiplayer experience won’t be revealed in earnest until September 9 on the Call of Duty Twitch channel. However, there are promises of shared progression with the Warzone battle royale mode and an “all-new” Zombies mode.

As for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions? At the moment, those are only slated to arrive sometime during the holiday season of 2020, depending on “when consoles are available.” Microsoft and Sony are believed to be playing a game of “chicken” on launch details (likely so that one doesn’t undercut the other on price), so there’s a chance you may have to wait until sometime after November 13 to play on one of the new systems.
This is the first Call of Duty game for both consoles. It’s not certain what the new hardware will do to improve the experience, but 4K support and faster loading times are possibilities. Whatever happens, there’s a good chance this will be one of the first games for many PS5 and Xbox Series X owners — it might shape their impressions of the new technology as much as it does the Call of Duty franchise.
