If you thought the limited edition Animal Crossing Switch was a coveted item, you haven’t seen anything yet. Nintendo Life (via Kotaku) reports Nintendo is releasing a Fortnite special edition of the Switch with a unique design and loads of software extras.
The blue and yellow Joy-Cons are the most conspicuous changes versus a standard Switch, but this version includes plenty of subtler Fortnite imagery. You’ll find the faces of many familiar Fortnite characters on both the back of the console as well as the dock.
This Switch comes with Fortnite preinstalled, as you might expect. It also gives you plenty of items to stand out, including the Wildcat outfit (plus two extra styles), Sleek Strike Back Bling (and two extra styles), and 2,000 V-Bucks to spend on other cosmetic items. Even if you don’t have a season pass, then, you won’t be stuck with default gear.
Nintendo has released Fortnite bundles before, but they’ve included otherwise run-of-the-mill Switch systems.
You might have to wait a while to get the Switch depending on where you live. It’ll be available in Europe on October 30, while Australia and New Zealand will get their turn on November 6. There’s no mention of a North American release, but these limited edition Switches tend to reach the continent in time. It’s priced at AU$470 ($342 US) in Australia, although European pricing hasn’t been provided yet.
It’s not a completely surprising launch. The holiday shopping frenzy is approaching, and there’s more pressure than ever to sell Switches between a pandemic-related spike in demand as well as fresh competition from the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. It’s also a relatively quiet fall for the platform, with the biggest highlight being a slew of Super Mario 35th anniversary games. Nintendo’s limited Fortnite edition could not only keep sales strong, but give people a reason to buy now instead of waiting for a possible upgraded Switch in 2021.
