  • Samsung has started rolling out a new update to the Galaxy Watch Active 2.
  • The software brings over features like fall detection, chat history, and advanced run metrics from the newer Galaxy Watch 3.

You have to hand it to Samsung, with devices like the Gear S2, Gear S3, and Galaxy Watch, the company has done an admirable job of updating its older wearables with software features from its newest products. That trend continues today with a hefty new update for the Galaxy Watch Active 2 that brings over the Galaxy Watch 3’s best features.

Runners can look forward to getting access to the Galaxy Watch 3’s Running Analysis feature, which can tell if you need to work on things like your flight time, vertical oscillation, and regularity while jogging. The Galaxy Watch Active 2 can now also track VO2 max, which can serve as a measure of your cardiovascular health.

Another feature making its way over to the Galaxy Watch Active 2 is fall detection. If the wearable detects what it thinks may be a fall, it will automatically present you with the option to send a message to up to four emergency contacts you designated ahead of time.

Samsung is also bringing over the Galaxy Watch 3’s communication features to the older model. With today’s update, your Galaxy Watch Active 2 will show you a history of your chat history with someone anytime that person sends you a new message. Your Galaxy Watch Active 2 will also display any photos your contacts send you instead of prompting you to look at them on your phone.

With the new Smart Replay feature, you can send a response without doing any typing. In a pinch, you have the option to send a Bitmoji as well. The way the company sees it, these features will help you more easily pick up a conversation right where you left it off, all without the need to swap back to your phone.

Lastly, Samsung is bringing over the Galaxy Watch 3’s scroll capture feature, which transfers any screenshots you take on your smartwatch to your phone automatically, making it easy to save things for future reference.

In short, today’s update makes one of our favorite fitness-focused smartwatches even better. As always, software rollouts can take time to reach everyone, so be patient if today’s update doesn’t show up on your Galaxy Watch Active 2 right away.
