More Power for the Small SUV

September 18, 2020

As in its stablemates, the CX-30’s forced-induction four makes a hearty 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque when filled up with 93 octane gasoline. Anything with a lower octane rating results in 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. That’s still plenty more than the standard mill’s 186 horses. That newfound power is sent to all four wheels via Mazda’s i-Activ all-wheel-drive system. Mazda didn’t note which transmission will be used in the CX-30 but it’s fair to assume the model will welcome the same six-speed automatic that pairs with this engine in other Mazdas.

We like the CX-30 for its comfort and practicality, and we also think it has more to offer a discerning driver. When we tested the naturally aspirated model earlier this year, we logged a 7.8-second run to 60 mph. Despite it feeling nimble and agile around our figure-eight course, the little Mazda lacked the eagerness of something that was genuinely sporty. The new turbo will hopefully make good on the CX-30’s full potential.

In addition to the new engine, the top-line CX-30 sports black-painted wheels, blacked-out mirror caps, a set of larger-diameter exhaust tips, and “turbo” badging on the tailgate. Mazda notes the new powertrain will be on sale by the end of this year, with pricing to be announced in the coming months.
