No, Sony doesn’t need to buy a publisher to compete with Microsoft

It’ll be a very interesting generation, that’s for sure. But they both have different strategies, and will measure success with different metrics.

I think for MS, success will primarily be measured by gamepass and how many users are subscribed to the service – regardless of platform. Number of consoles sold I think will be secondary to that – although having Bethesda’s catalogue in their back pocket will go along way to push Xbox sales.

For Sony though, it’ll still be all about console sales. In that regard they still have the playing field, and if Sony can transition their install base, then potentially that’s over 100million PS5’s they’d be looking to sell.

With that in view, Microsoft is still the one that needs to make up lost ground since they’re sitting at about half that number.
The question is, will the acquisition of Bethesda be enough to make up the difference?

Only time will tell.
