Update – October 2, 2020: We have updated this article confirming that Cobra Kai Season 3 will drop on Netflix on January 8.

We tell you when you can expect to watch Cobra Kai season 3, plus some more information on this hit series.

When is the Cobra Kai Season 3 release date?

As confirmed by Netflix in a new trailer, Cobra Kai season 3 will drop on January 8, 2021.

What is Cobra Kai about, anyway?

The series is a continuation of the original Karate Kid movie series from the 1980s. That film series centered on Daniel LaRusso, a young teenager in a town near Los Angeles who learns martial arts from his master “Mr. Miyagi.” LaRusso has to ultimately battle another martial artist, Johnny Lawrence. He is a member of the Cobra Kai dojo in the first Karate Kid movie. In the climax of that film, LaRusso defeats Lawrence in a match at the All-Valley Karate Tournament.

The Cobra Kai series takes place in the present day, where Lawrence, now in his 50s, is down on his luck, and LaRusso has become a successful car salesman. Lawrence then encounters a teenager being bullied and fights off the attackers. The teen asks Lawrence to teach him martial arts, and that leads him to reopen the Cobra Kai dojo. The series shows the new conflicts between Lawrence and LaRusso, who opens up his own dojo.

Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprise their roles from The Karate Kid movie series as LaRusso and Lawrence. The show itself is a mix of drama and comedy, with the theme of adults not being able to let go of their pasts.

What will Cobra Kai Season 3 be all about?

The Netflix trailer for the Cobra Kai launch shows a brief glimpse of Season 3. At the end of the trailer, we see LaRusso and it looks like he has returned to Japan and the home of his late master “Mr. Miyagi.” He is seen briefly battling an unnamed and mostly unseen enemy. We also hear a voice over from LaRusso saying that Mr. Miyagi would not keep secrets from him. However,  an unnamed person then says, “Are you sure about that?”

Will there be a Cobra Kai Season 4 on Netflix?

Yes! Netflix confirmed in its Season 3 date announcement trail that Cobra Kai Season 4 has been greenlighted. There’s no word yet on when it will drop on Netflix.

Wasn’t the show on YouTube first?

Yes. Cobra Kai debuted in 2018 on Google’s YouTube video platform as part of its YouTube Originals lineup of scripted series. This was Google’s attempt to launch a service that would more directly compete with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and other premium subscription services. People could watch the show if they paid for a YouTube Premium subscription (previously known as YouTube Red).

The series was a huge success, and YouTube actually approved the production for a third season. However, several months later, Google decided to get out of the original scripted TV show business. Cobra Kai was then picked up by Netflix, and its first two seasons debuted on the streaming service on August 28, 2020. Netflix will also show the upcoming third season of the series.

That’s all we know about Cobra Kai Season 3 on Netflix. We will update this post when we learn more.
