Destiny 2 PS5 And Xbox Series X/S Upgrades Launch In December

Destiny 2‘s next major expansion, Beyond Light, is currently scheduled for a November release but it won’t be too long before players can experience an enhanced version of the game on next-gen consoles. Developer Bungie has announced that Destiny 2 will officially launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S on December 8, and just which enhancements each console will receive.

While the PS5 and Xbox Series X will both be capable of running Destiny 2 at a 4K resolution and at 60 FPS, the Xbox Series S will still display the game at 1080p. Microsoft’s smaller console will be capable of reaching that resolution at 60 FPS as well and will also benefit from all the other next-gen features that the Xbox Series X and the PS5 will receive.

Bungie says that this is the first time that it has offered a Field of View customization on consoles, and that the aim is to enable a FOV range similar to that on PC.

“We’re currently testing these settings to ensure smooth performance across each platform and will have additional details closer to launch,” Bungie said.

While loading times will be reduced, these will also be dependent on networking and matchmaking due to the online nature of Destiny 2. One big quality-of-life improvement will be the ability to inspect your Guardian loadout much quicker, and Bungie has also confirmed that cross-generation play will be available within the same console family tree.

Destiny 2 will still be playable through backwards compatibility on the new consoles, and Bungie noted that faster load times and cross-generation play will be available on November 10. In GameSpot’s own testing of Destiny 2 on Xbox Series X, it was found that the game already benefits from vastly-improved load times in its current non-optimized state.

You can read the full list of visual improvements below.

Last week’s game reset added the annual Festival of the Lost event to Destiny 2’s sandbox, and when the creepy carnival wraps up there’ll only be only a few days until the Beyond Light expansion is added to Destiny 2. The game is also being dramatically reduced in size, but this will require players to redownload it.

Xbox One players will get Beyond Light with their Xbox Game Pass subscription, and they can currently access to the previous expansions, Forsaken and Shadowkeep.
