The BMW X5 M Competition (and its swoopy-roofed sibling, the X6 M Competition) are proof that though the laws of physics can’t be broken, they can be bent. Despite their 5,500-ish-pound curb weights, the two SUVs are shockingly athletic and poised when the going gets twisty. And when the going gets bumpy, they’re comfortable enough to work as daily drivers, too. BMW M has poured some of its old mojo into these bad boys, and to celebrate the third (and very best) iteration of their performance SUVs, BMW has announced special First Edition models for both the X5 M and X6 M.
The First Edition models of the go-fast SUVs can be had in either Frozen Marina Bay Blue or Frozen Dark Silver (“frozen” being BMW-speak for matte paint). Both colors are set off by a set of lightweight BMW M wheels with an exclusive high-gloss jet-black finish. The wheels measure 21 inches up front and 22 inches at the rear, and they wear sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. The First Editions also have their fair share of carbon fiber. For example, the mirror caps, engine cover for the 617-hp 4.4-liter twin turbo V-8, and the X6 M’s rear spoiler are all made from the stuff.
Inside, both First Edition variants will feature a two-tone interior with light Silverstone and Midnight Blue leather upholstery, as well as Shakir Orange stitching laced throughout the cabin. The seats have additional black Alcantara inserts on the bolsters, and the center console and dashboard both get a smattering of carbon fiber. The center console also wears a plaque that says “1/250,” because that’s how many of each are being made.
That’s right, just 500 total examples of the X5 M and X6 M First Edition are slated for production, which will make them very rare birds indeed. If you want one, we’d suggest moving abroad—as neither model will be offered here.
