I feel like Sony out maneuvered Microsoft yet again.
Sony could have sat on PlayStation 4’s 115 million sales but instead they pushed forward with next gen which forced Microsoft to push into next gen before they could get their new studios up and running. So now we have a situation where Sony has a slew of launch games and clearly is set up to continue with new games into 2021 and beyond while Microsoft has no games to launch with and the games they have shown are so far out they can’t even show game play, they even tried to rush out Halo for launch which if anything ended up damaging them more than if they had just waited. It seems like Sony is basically going to have two maybe even more years where Microsoft has nothing other than what they can buy from other studios.
And it’s not just the game development that shows that Sony was ahead of Microsoft in their next generation planning. It’s the fact that so many of PlayStation 5’s features seem truly next gen when compared with Microsoft. It’s things like the Dual Sense and the UI the SSD and Tempest 3D Audio which all seem like they are a generation ahead of Microsoft’s offerings which all feel like they are just recycled from the xbox one.
And all that happened despite the bombardment of negative press Microsoft generated towards them while Sony took their time did their reveals at their own pace. They countered Microsoft’s moves by letting them hype themselves up then when it died down they did their own things which included Microsoft’s two consoles by simply waiting them out on the price reveal then pricing their own consoles competitively. Most importantly was the digital console which at only $100 more but more than twice as powerful as Microsoft’s SAD console and including all the same features as the full PlayStation 5 making it the far more attractive option for those looking for a cheaper console option.
I feel like this generation Sony is going to come out of the gate running and by the time Microsoft can get it’s game development into the race Sony is going to already have a huge line-up of games and a huge lead to snowball for the rest of the generation. All they have to do is keep the quality games coming fast enough to keep up interest and all the other pieces will fall into place.
And as a wiser man than myself once said “Sony Always Wins Baby!”
