  • Many users around the US are experiencing Gmail issues.
  • Google is aware of the outage and will issue an update when it expects the problem to be fixed.
  • This Gmail outage follows Monday’s major Google services outage that affected YouTube, Gmail, Google Docs, and more.

Following the major outage that affected YouTube, Gmail, Google Docs, and other popular Google services on Monday, it appears Gmail is down yet again.

The Gmail outage is mainly affecting US users at this time, according to DownDetector. Gmail stopped working for many at approximately 3PM ET, with reports ramping up over the last hour. The screenshot below was taken from DownDetector’s website at 5PM ET.

Google confirmed that Gmail is, in fact, down for many users right now. The company wrote the following message on its Workspace blog:

We’re aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a significant subset of users. The affected users are able to access Gmail, but are seeing error messages, high latency, and/or other unexpected behavior. We will provide an update by 12/15/20, 4:30 PM detailing when we expect to resolve the problem. Please note that this resolution time is an estimate and may change.

Many users on Twitter are receiving error messages, and at least one Android Authority staffer is having Gmail issues, too.

Following Monday’s events, Google clarified on Twitter that the outage was due to an authentication system error caused by an internal storage quota issue. It is currently not known if this current Gmail outage is caused by the same authentication issue, though we will keep an eye on Google’s social channels for further updates.

If you’re one of the unlucky Gmail users, there’s not much you can do right now to fix the issue. Keep an eye on Google’s Workspace status website for updates on when the service might come back online.
