HBO is hard at work on Game of Thrones spinoffs, that much we know. How many and which ones–that question is a bit tougher to answer. HBO’s Chief Creative Officer Casey Bloys, though, offered up a bit of new info on what we can expect from the future of Game of Thrones in a new interview with TVLine.
“We know George [R. R. Martin] has this incredible work with all of this really rich and complicated history and all of these characters,” Bloys said. “So we’ve been trying to be thoughtful about what are the stories that are worth telling. What would be exciting? What would fans love?”
We know that HBO is gearing up for full production on the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon. That story covers the rise of House Targaryen, with King Viserys Targaryen as one of the story’s most prominent characters. What else is on tap?
“Dunk and Egg is one of [the potential stories], but not the only one,” Bloys said. Where House of the Dragon is set 300 years prior to the events of the Game of Thrones TV series, the Tales of Dunk and Egg are set just 90 years before. The stories come from a series of three novellas following the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and Aegon V Targaryen (Egg). Martin published “The Hedge Knight” in 1998, “The Sworn Sword” in 2003, and “The Mystery Knight” in 2010.
News that Dunk and Egg was in early development broke last month. Previously, though, Martin had said on his own blog that he wanted to write “seven or eight or 10 more” Dunk and Egg stories, and any television adaptations of the characters would wait until those stories were finished.
Bloys doesn’t say anywhere that a Dunk and Egg show is definitively in development or bound for air, so consider all of this potential news–simply word that HBO has Dunk and Egg on its table and under consideration. HBO reportedly has a Westeros-set animated series in development, too.
House of the Dragon, meanwhile, is much more imminent. Principal photography begins this spring according to WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar, and Bloys has previously stated that the show, currently set for a single 10-episode season, will premiere sometime in 2022. If Dunk and Egg is in the works, it’ll likely be after that.
