Maserati Releases “Spy Pics” of Its New Grecale Compact Luxury SUV

February 19, 2021

The Maserati Levante is about to gain a little sibling in the form of the Grecale compact SUV. Due to debut before the end of the year, the Grecale seeks to take on the likes of the Porsche Macan and Tesla Model Y. Credit Maserati’s decision to offer the Grecale with a variety of powertrains, including gas, gasoline-electric hybrid, and battery-electric options. That said, we wager the latter setup won’t arrive until a year or two after the little Maserati SUV initially goes on sale.

Although the Italian brand is keeping mum on many of the model’s key details, it did release a trio of blurry “spy” pictures of a camouflaged Grecale prototype, and what we see looks promising. At the front, the Grecale sports a long hood and a low-mounted grille that mimics that of other Maserati models, including the recently introduced 2022 MC20 sports car.

The side profile, meanwhile, features a window line seemingly cribbed from the Ghibli mid-size sedan. A stubby tail with boomerang-shaped LED taillights and big, quad exhaust pipes poking out from the rear fascia manage to emphasize the SUV’s width and hint at its performance potential. And those pipes also indicate that this particular Grecale is most certainly not relying on a battery-electric powertrain for propulsion.

Whether the proportions and details under the camouflage work as a whole still remains a mystery. Nevertheless, we’re hopeful the production Grecale will look as pretty as Maserati’s current lineup of vehicles.
