A New J.J. Abrams Show Has Been Picked Up By HBO Max

HBO Max has ordered a series based on an original concept by J.J. Abrams, with Jennifer Yale (Legion, Dexter) attached as showrunner. The title is a play on words, with the plot following a college student taking part as a subject in a clinical trial.

“This series follows a desperate college student who signs up for a clinical trial that begins a wild, harrowing, mind and reality-bending adventure,” the official synopsis reads. The show is set to be produced by J.J. Abrams’ company Bad Robot in association with Warner Bros. TV, with Bad Robot’s Ben Stephenson and Rachel Rusch Rich attached as executive producer and co-executive producer respectively.

“It’s been incredible fun weaving this rather insane yarn with Jenn, and I am grateful to her and everyone at HBO Max for the opportunity to bring this story to life,” Abrams said about the project.

“I have felt so privileged to work with J.J. and Bad Robot on expanding J.J.’s exhilarating story to create a twisty, thought-provoking thriller where almost anything is possible and yet everything is planned,” Jennifer Yale said in a statement. “Now partnering with HBO Max to make it a reality is a dream.”

That’s all the detail we have on the project so far, with casting, expected release date, and the number of episodes as yet unannounced. WarnerMedia has an ongoing $250 million contract with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot that includes movies, TV, and even video games.
