Kia Sportage, Cadenza Recalled for Fire Risk, Owners Told to Park Outside

March 10, 2021

Kia Motors America (KMA) is voluntarily recalling the following vehicles: 2017-2019 Cadenza vehicles manufactured from June 2, 2016 to June 14, 2019 not equipped with Smart Cruise Control (SCC); 2017-2021 Sportage vehicles manufactured from December 10, 2015 to October 23, 2020 not equipped with Smart Cruise Control (SCC). The recall population was determined by a review of vehicle and supplier production records.

Kia is conducting this recall as a preventative measure to mitigate any potential fire risk. It has been determined an engine compartment fire may occur in the area where the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) is located. The electrical circuit within the HECU may experience a short circuit condition that results in excessive current, thereby increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire. Although the cause of the potential engine compartment fire is known to be an electrical short circuit within the HECU, the exact cause of the short circuit condition is unknown.

Potential warnings include illumination of various warning lights on the instrument panel including tire pressure warning light, ABS warning light, MIL warning light, burning/melting odor and smoke from the engine compartment. This issue was identified in a foreign market and there are no known fires, crashes or injuries in vehicles sold within the U.S. market related to this issue.

KMA Action: All owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail beginning April 30, 2021 with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Kia dealer for the recall repair. Until the recall repair is completed, owners are recommended to park their vehicles outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures. Kia dealers will be instructed to replace certain fuses in the electrical junction box to prevent an over-current condition in the HECU’s electrical circuit board.

For Sportage vehicles, dealers will be instructed to install two 30A fuses instead of 40A fuses for vehicles not equipped with Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) and two 25A fuses instead of 40A fuses for vehicles equipped with EPB. In addition, for EPB-equipped vehicles, dealers will also update the HECU software with a newer version.

For Cadenza vehicles, dealers will be instructed to install a new fuse kit which contains a 25A fuse instead of a 40A fuse.
Kia will reimburse owners for repair expenses already incurred pursuant to Kia’s General Reimbursement Plan filed May 11, 2020. Customers with questions may contact KMA consumer assistance at 1-800-333-4542 or their Kia dealer.
