New Texas Chainsaw Massacre Movie Will Be A Sequel Featuring “Old Man Leatherface”

The next movie in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series will be a direct sequel to the classic 1974 original. Producer Fede Alvarez has confirmed that the film, which is expected later this year, will feature an older version of iconic chainsaw-wielding villain Leatherface.

In an interview with Bloody Disgusting’s Boo Crew Podcast, Alvarez explained that the new Texas Chainsaw film will be set many years after the events of Tobe Hooper’s original. “It is a direct sequel, and it is the same character. It is old man Leatherface,” he said.

Alvarez went on to tease a few more details about the movie, comparing it to the approach he took with his 2013 remake of The Evil Dead. “Everything is classic, old school gags,” he said. “A lot of the approach that we had with Evil Dead–never VFX, to do everything on camera. It’s a very old school approach to filmmaking. Vintage lenses… it’s very similar to the original film.”

This will be the ninth movie in the franchise. The film doesn’t have an official title or release yet, but the first poster was revealed back in October. It’s directed by David Blue Garcia, who replaced original directors Andy and Ryan Tohill after they fired a week into production over “creative differences.”

The new Texas Chainsaw film is only one of several movies in the long-running horror franchises due for release over the next year. The Candyman reboot arrives in August, with Halloween Kills following in October. The latest Scream movie–simply titled Scream–is due in January 2022, with Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette all set to return to their roles from the previous movies in the hit slasher series.
