Director Zack Snyder has enjoyed a long and successful career making DC movies, dating back to Watchmen in 2009, but he may not be back for another DC superhero film anytime soon. He told Deadline that his future with DC is uncertain, in part because Warner Bros. “hasn’t really expressed any interest” in making more DC films with him.
“So, I don’t know. I haven’t really, to be honest, you know, Warner Bros. hasn’t really expressed any interest in making more movies with me, and that’s 100% fine. I understand,” he said.
Snyder is now focused on the Army of the Dead franchise, which stars Dave Bautista and hits Netflix in May. Snyder said he’s trying to write “another movie” for Netflix, while he also has an Norse anime series for Netflix in the works. Snyder is also developing a German-language prequel to Army of the Dead, for Netflix. Overall, Snyder is “trying to stay on that franchise.” After that, he’d like to make a new film called Horse Latitudes. “I’m just having a great time shooting these movies right now,” he said.
If Snyder does ever return to the world of DC, he said he’d like to tackle a new version of Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns, among others.
“Well, look, there are some comic books that I’m a fan, so there are comic books I love, you know? I’ve always wanted to do Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns and a couple others, but I don’t know,” he said. “I’m just, I’m pretty happy with just kind of working, the movie that we just finished, but I don’t really have like a burning desire to make another comic book movie, I’ll say.”
If Snyder is finished with DC, he made a major impact at the box office. Justice League was a juggernaut with $657.9 million globally, while Batman v. Superman was even bigger with $873.6 million at the global box office. Man of Steel, meanwhile, made $668 million.
Snyder’s latest film is the Snyder Cut of Justice League, which is streaming now on HBO Max.
