In 2021, Marvel fans will finally be able to watch Black Widow–a year after its original release date. However, you’ll have the option to watch it on Disney+ or see it in the theater, but you’ll have to wait until July 9.
With the current vaccine rollout, it’s still not entirely safe to head to theaters, and Disney has been keeping an eye on the situation. The company announced on Twitter that Black Widow will hit the service two months later than its current release date.
However, it won’t be free for all Disney+ subscribers. Like Raya and the Last Dragon this year and Mulan in 2020, you’ll have to pay a rental fee on Premier Access. The cost for this rental will be $30, which is still cheaper than the family going to the theater together.
The 101 Dalmatians prequel Cruella will also arrive to Disney+ with Premier Access on May 28. And the next Pixar movie, Luca will also head to Disney+ on Friday, June 18. However, with Luca–much like the Soul release–it will be available for all Disney+ subscribers at launch.
That’s not the only movie Disney announced for theatrical releases. The Ryan Reynolds comedy Free Guy has been pushed to August 13. The next MCU film Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will release on September 3, The Kingsman prequel The King’s Man has been pushed to December 22, Deep Water has moved to January 14, 2022, and Death of the Nile will now release on February 11, 2022.
This wasn’t a quick decision for Disney, as it’s been keeping an eye on the situation. Last week, Disney CEO Bob Chapek spoke about Black Widow’s release. “We’re waiting to see exactly how guests respond to these re-openings [of movie theaters],” Chapek said, referencing how cinemas in New York and Los Angeles just re-opened. “We’re going to remain flexible. We’ll make the call, essentially probably at the last minute in terms of how these films come to market, whether it’s Black Widow or any other title.”
