Godzilla Vs. Kong Is Crushing It At The Box Office

Godzilla vs. Kong is having a massive run at the box office, even despite the pandemic. The movie made $48.5 million in the US over its five-day opening weekend period and another $76.1 million from international markets in its second weekend. In total the monster mash-up movie has now reached about $285.4 million worldwide through Sunday.

In only five days in the US, Godzilla vs. Kong has surpassed the total amount of money that Wonder Woman 1984 made during its run in the US, which isn’t a perfect comparison given that Wonder Woman 1984 was released in December 2020. Back then, far fewer theaters in the US were open due to the pandemic; today, with millions of people in the US vaccinated, more than 94% of US cinemas are open.

Perhaps a better comparison is to its predecessor, Godzilla King of the Monsters, which made $47.7 million over its first three days in a world where there was no pandemic. Godzilla vs. Kong has cleared $48.5 million in five days in the US.

Warner Bros. executive Andrew Cripps said in a statement to Deadline about the box office numbers: “It’s no surprise that these two iconic titans would lead the charge back to theaters around the world and even exceed expectations in such a massive way.”

Godzilla vs. Kong also debuted on HBO Max on Wednesday, March 31, and it will be available to stream there for a month before getting removed just like Warner Bros.’ other films as part of the film studio’s unique strategy for 2021.

Godzilla vs. Kong’s release in the US came a week after the movie debuted in international markets. The rollout isn’t finished yet, as the film opens in Godzilla’s home country, Japan, later in May. For more, check out GameSpot’s Godzilla vs. Kong review.
