The ongoing global chip shortage is wreaking havoc on multiple industries. Although there are many reasons why you can’t find the brand new Sony PlayStation 5 or Microsoft Xbox X/S, the chip shortage is one of them.
However, even before the chip shortage began, it was also difficult to buy a Nintendo Switch, even though the console first launched in March 2017. Unfortunately, Nintendo itself posits that the chip shortage is only going to make finding a Switch more difficult for the rest of 2021.
In its most recent earnings call (via ArsTechnica), Nintendo said hardware production “might be affected by obstacles to the procurement of parts, including the increase in global demand for semiconductor components.”

Now, Nintendo has a reputation for under-promising and over-delivering when it comes to forecasts. For example, on this same call, the company reported sales of 28.8 million Switch consoles during its previous fiscal year. That’s a staggering number for a four-year-old product.
