Android TV Discover page landing on Nvidia Shield TV

TL;DR

  • If you own an Nvidia Shield TV device, you should soon see the new Discover page within Android TV.
  • The Discover page essentially replicates the core aspects of the Google TV experience, but without a full Google TV overhaul.
  • Shield TV devices in the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, and Australia will see the update. Devices in Italy and Spain will see a UI update, but not the new Discover page.

When Google launched the Chromecast with Google TV, speculation abounded that the company was nixing Android TV. However, it eventually turned out that Google TV is a specialized interface that exists on top of Android TV, so the two can exist simultaneously.

Google also said it would push Google TV to current Android TV boxes and televisions. While that hasn’t happened on any large scale yet, the company has pushed out tweaks to the UI of Android TV that replicates at least part of the experience of Google TV. Now, it looks like the popular Nvidia Shield TV devices are next on the list to get this update.

Nvidia tells us that the new Discover page within Android TV is rolling out now to devices in the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, and Australia. The Discover page aggregates content from across streaming apps, giving you a one-stop shop for content suggestions. It is not quite the same as what Google TV does so well, but close enough.

Along with the new Discover page, Android TV will also see a few UI tweaks. For example, the “All Apps” view will now just be “Apps” and appear directly on the home screen.

Interestingly, Italy and Spain will see those UI changes, but not see the new Discover page.

Nvidia says the update is rolling out now to Shield TV devices and it hopes to complete the rollout by June 24. In other words, it might be a week before you see the changes in your system.
