TL;DR

  • Sony announced that signups are now open for its PlayStation 5 beta testing program.
  • PS5 owners who sign up for the test will be able to check out and provide feedback on new software features before they are released.
  • There’s no word on when the first software beta will be made available to selected testers.

Want to be part of the cool kids club? You are in luck. Sony has just announced that it will launch a PlayStation 5 beta program for its software. Signups for the program are now open for PS5 game console owners 18 years of age and above from the US, Canada, Japan, the UK, Germany, and France.

The program is designed to get feedback on new software features that Sony wants to add to the PS5. If Sony accepts you into the program, it will send over an email with instructions on how to download the PlayStation 5 beta software. Your name will also be saved for any future PS5 beta tests. Once the test begins, owners can switch back to their standard PS5 software version before the test ends.

There’s no word on how many PS5 owners will be selected for the software beta test, nor when the testing will actually begin. There’s also no word on just what new features will be included in this beta. The last major PS5 features update added support for USB external storage, among other things.

Of course, the older PlayStation 4 console had its own software beta program. In addition, Microsoft has allowed Xbox console owners to check out new features and updates in beta for years. It will be interesting to see if Sony will continue to give PS5 owners a way to check out new features beyond this initial software test.
