Netflix’s newest dating game is raising a lot of questions.
On Wednesday, the streaming service dropped a bizarre first trailer for Sexy Beasts — an undeniably cursed Face Off-meets-Love Is Blind reality TV show set to premiere on the platform this July. In the series, sexy singles are made up by professional special effects artists to look like genetically modified Masked Singer contestants. Then, they’re sent out on blind dates designed to put personality before appearance, and entertainment value above all else.
We don’t know the full format of the show yet, but, based on the trailer, we’re guessing it’s your basic multi-contestant per eligible bachelor/bachelorette format with a big “behind the mask” reveal for each love story’s finale. You can watch the full trailer right here:
The sneak peek drew the attention of thousands on social media, with the original Netflix tweet of the trailer earning more than 28,000 retweets, 25,000 likes, and 4,000 comments at the time of writing. Many were fixated on the same questions, namely “What is this?” and “Am I on drugs?”
But some had more specific theories about Sexy Beasts. One user speculated the show was created specifically with viral internet moments in mind, and others argued the show’s premise was defeated by the body type discrimination apparent in the series’ casting.
