Sennheiser CX True Wireless — premium ‘buds for less

TL;DR

  • Sennheiser’s latest earbuds improve upon their predecessor with an IPX4 rating and better battery life.
  • The earphones support Bluetooth 5.2 and the AAC and aptX high-quality Bluetooth codecs.
  • The Sennheiser CX True Wireless will be available on July 8 and will retail for $129.95.

Sennheiser is known for its audiophile-grade headphones, but recently it’s shown quite a bit of enthusiasm toward the consumer audio market. The company’s latest release are the Sennheiser CX True Wireless, which replace the impressive CX 400BT. The German company stays true to its roots and prioritizes sound quality above all else, but it doesn’t forsake requested upgrades like a water-resistance rating and better battery life.

These are among the first true wireless earbuds to use Bluetooth 5.2 firmware, which leaves the door open for LE Audio and LC3 codec support. Upon release, we know that these earphones support three Bluetooth codecs: SBC, AAC, and aptX, so you can enjoy consistent, high-quality audio no matter your source device. In addition, Bluetooth 5.2 further improves power efficiency, contributing to the earphones’ long battery life.

Sennheiser’s earphones are rated to last nine hours on a single charge, totaling 27 hours of playtime with the USB-C case’s reserve power. Listeners get access to a full suite of EQ controls through the Sennheiser Smart Control app, which is great for those with specific preferences. If the Sennheiser CX 400BT and Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 are any indications, the CX True Wireless’ default sound profile will amplify bass and treble notes with a de-emphasis in the upper mids. This will be confirmed after we complete testing.

The earbuds feature an IPX4 rating that ensures they can withstand almost any workout you throw at them. This is a big improvement over the CX 400BT, which lack an IP rating altogether. Just as before, the earphones feature touch controls that anyone can customize in the free mobile app. You can also choose your preferred smart assistant (Google Assistant or Siri) and more.

Starting July 8, you can purchase the Sennheiser CX True Wireless in black or white for $129.95, so long as you’re in North America.
