Poll: Do you ever turn off 5G on your phone?

July 23, 2021

5G has been around for a couple of years now, with plenty of networks around the world and even budget phones offering the new connectivity standard. In fact, it’s probably easier to note the countries which don’t have 5G, such as India.

Nevertheless, we do wonder whether there are any readers out there who disable 5G on their phones. Do you leave 5G on all the time, do you turn it off now and again, or do you permanently disable it? Let us know via the poll below.

There are a couple of reasons why you might want to disable 5G in the first place. For one, the first wave of 5G phones reportedly consumed up to 20% more power than 4G, according to a Xiaomi executive. Power consumption has improved with the latest phones though, featuring more efficient integrated modems and improved tech in general.

Another reason why you might want to disable your 5G connectivity is because you’re simply satisfied with 4G LTE. Today’s LTE networks still deliver solid speeds for web browsing, HD video streaming, music streaming, and other apps. You might not have 5G networks in your area either, so what’s the point of your phone searching for a signal that isn’t there?

Of course, there are a couple of reasons to keep 5G enabled too. The speed boost is the most obvious upside to keeping it switched on, especially on mmWave networks that offer a huge leap over LTE. Then there’s the fact that 5G is more resilient when it comes to congestion, so you might experience fewer dropped connections.

So do you ever disable 5G on your phone? Let us know via the poll above and leave a comment if you’ve got more on your mind.
