MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition promises to fix MIUI’s biggest issue

TL;DR

  • Xiaomi has revealed the MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition update.
  • It brings performance improvements and background app tweaks.
  • It also offers over 300 system and system app fixes.

Xiaomi‘s MIUI Android skin is one of the more feature-packed skins out there, delivering everything from scrolling screenshots and dual apps to Super Wallpapers and customizable themes. Unfortunately, one of the biggest issues we’ve noted is that performance and stability can vary wildly depending on the device.

Now, Xiaomi has announced the MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition update in China, and it’s solely focused on bringing quite a few under-the-hood changes.

For one, the company says read/write performance should decrease by less than 5% after 36 months. This is largely due to improved defragmentation, it says. Xiaomi adds that it’s also identified 51 scenarios in need of optimization, resulting in average power savings of 8% and CPU usage dropping by 15% in these use-cases.

We also get a so-called “Atomic memory” feature, which should allow users to keep more apps in the background without having them reload upon re-opening. Check out the company’s comparison between the Mi 10 Ultra and Huawei P40 Pro.

Finally, the manufacturer says it’s fixed 160 system issues and 224 system app issues. So hopefully any major system problems you’ve experienced are fixed as a result of this update.

There’s no word on a global rollout for MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition, but Chinese users will get the update from August 13. Prominent devices slated to get the update include the Mi Mix 4, Mi 11 series, Mi 10 series, Mi 10 Ultra, Redmi K40 series, Redmi K30 Pro, and Redmi K30S.

On the one hand, we’re a little disappointed to see no user-facing features being added to MIUI with this update. But on the other hand, we’re glad to see Xiaomi focus on what is arguably MIUI’s biggest pain point in 2021.
