Microsoft Surface Duo 2 FCC filings reveal 5G, Wi-Fi 6, and NFC support

TL;DR

  • The Microsoft Surface Duo 2 FCC documents have now been filed, and they reveal a bit more about the upcoming Android smartphone.
  • The filings show that the phone will indeed support 5G networks, along with NFC, Wi-Fi 6, and more.
  • The phone is expected to be officially revealed during a Microsoft virtual event on September 22.

The Surface Duo 2 FCC filings confirm a few more hardware features about the dual-screen smartphone. It will support 5G networks and 4G carriers, and it will support the faster Wi-Fi 6 standard. It also shows that the phone will include NFC wireless support, which was sorely lacking on the original Surface Duo.

One curious thing is that the Surface Duo 2 FCC papers show support for “Wireless Power Transfer.” While that would seem to suggest that the Surface Duo 2 will support wireless charging, Windows Central points out that the leaked designs appear too small to support known Qi-based hardware. It’s possible owners could use the phone to charge up an accessory, such as a powered Surface Pen stylus.

Previous leaks of the Surface Duo 2 suggest that the phone’s design won’t change much from the original. However, it looks like the phone will have three rear cameras this time. Windows Central has previously reported, via unnamed sources, that the phone will have two 5.8-inch displays with rounded edges, along with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, 8GB of RAM, 128GB, and 256GB storage options. Powering it all will be a 4,400mAh battery.

Hopefully, Microsoft’s hardware event on Wednesday will finally pull back the covers on the Surface Duo 2, along with some other Surface-branded Windows tablets and notebooks.
