Netflix Releases The Witcher Season 2 Sneak Peeks, Announces Season 3 Renewal

The Witcher Season 2 finally hits this winter, just in time for Christmas. The teasers have been short and mysterious, thus far, but Netflix offered up a pair of sneak peek videos and some big announcements–including that The Witcher Season 3 is on the way–as well.

The first clip gives us a look at the first episode of Season 2, based on the Witcher story “A Grain of Truth,” in which Geralt comes across a manor inhabited by a man named Nivellen, who has the face of a beast.

The Witcher Season 1 ended with the meeting of Geralt of Rivia and Princess Cirilla of Cintra–better known as Ciri–as the show’s three separate timelines converged, while sorcerers including Yennefer of Vengeberg fought off the invading Nilfgaardian army. The second clip focuses on those two, total strangers, destined by fate to meet each other, along with all the strangeness that brings.

Season 2 will likely begin Ciri’s journey in earnest. The series roughly retold the events of the first Witcher novel, The Blood of Elves, intertwined with some events from author Andrzej Sapkowski’s short stories following the character. Things like an Instagram post from star (and huge Witcher fan) Henry Cavill hint that Season 2 will begin covering the series’ second book, The Time of Contempt–that post includes a quote from that book.

The series will continue to weave tales from Geralt’s short stories as well, with Season 2 beginning with the short story A Grain of Truth. Stars like Cavill, Freya Allan (Ciri), and Anya Charlotra (Yennefer) will return, though the complications of COVID-related delays have forced at least one actor to step away from the series.

Almost as big as the two clips from the imminent show was the announcement that The Witcher Season 3 is a sure thing. Additionally, Netflix’s Witcher department is at work on a second animated movie and what they describe as a “Kids and Family” series set in the world of the Witcher.

Details on all of these projects are sparse. We didn’t get a release window for The Witcher Season 3, and there wasn’t even a hint of whether the animated film is something new or if it’s a sequel to Netflix’s recently-released The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, an animated movie following Geralt’s mentor Vesemir. The streamer is also prepping a prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin, which is set 1,200 years before the events of The Witcher. The Witcher Season 2 debuts on Netflix on December 17, 2021.
