Ava DuVernay’s Netflix series about Colin Kaepernick is almost here, with Colin in Black and White landing on the streaming service tomorrow.

The Selma and When They See Us director worked with the former NFL quarterback and activist to create a limited series about his life, with narration from Kaepernick himself. Kaepernick’s rise to activism gained global attention when he took a knee during the national anthem before football games, a protest against social injustice, systemic racism, and police brutality.

“It’s about how do you get to be the person who can do that. How do you get to be the person who can take a stance for what you believe in and stick by that no matter the slings and arrows that are coming at you,” DuVernay told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show on Thursday. “So it’s about his early adulthood, his teenage life, and the little things that formed him to become the man that he is.”

“Everyone’s got a story. We have to ask the second question,” she added. “Go deeper. Why do you think what you think? Why do you believe that?”

Colin in Black and White premieres on Netflix on Oct. 29.
