QUICK ANSWER

To delete labels and folders in Gmail, go to the labels section in the Settings. There, you can delete whatever you like. The process is more or less the same for both mobile and desktop.

Before you start

Before you start with the virtual shears and start hacking away at your folders, you first need to look at your filters and see which ones will be affected by you deleting a label. You then need to amend the filter accordingly with a different label. If you don’t, the next time an email comes in and trips that filter, the label you just deleted will be restored by Gmail!

So if you don’t want your hard deleting work to be in vain, it’s best to tweak the affected filters first. It’s best to do this step on the desktop Gmail. When you’re sure all of the affected filters have been changed, you can start deleting.
