As well as starring in the new Matrix movie, did you know Keanu Reeves also has a comic out called BRZRKR?
In an interview clip above from The Late Show, Stephen Colbert asks the man himself about an image in which the main character sits slumped on a bench in the rain — a moment oddly reminiscent of the famous “Sad Keanu” meme that went viral over a decade ago.
“I’m just eating a sandwich, man!” says Reeves, the moment the image comes out. “Man, I’m eating a sandwich!”
Colbert’s response? “So you’re not actually sad in ‘Sad Keanu’?”
“I was thinking. I had some stuff going on,” says Reeves. “I was hungry!”
Ultimately, Reeves doesn’t appear to understand why he’s so meme-able. But judging by his improvised song at the end of the interview (“🎵MEME ON ME🎵”) he doesn’t seem all that concerned about it. And, hey — the meme even appears to be influencing art now, too. One day soon we’ll see that comic scene on the big screen (Netflix has the rights) and things will have come full circle.
