Dr. Evil is back pinkies up and cackling in General Motors Super Bowl ad

In 2022, Austin Powers‘ Dr. Evil is now the second biggest threat to the planet after climate change. So he’s taken over General Motors to reclaim his No. 1 title. By saving the world with EVs. In order to then…take over the world? None of it tracks, but have any of Dr. Evil’s plans made any sense?

That’s the conceit of GM’s Super Bowl ad airing during the third quarter of Sunday’s big game. It brings back Mike Myers as the dim-witted mastermind along with Rob Lowe, Mindy Sterling, and Seth Green in their original roles. There’s even a new baby with a familiar face in the mix. The final Austin Powers movie came out in 2002.

GM has an ambitious plan to sell 30 different electric vehicles by the end of 2025. Currently the electric options include the Chevy Bolt lineup (which is on pause because of battery fire risk), GMC Hummer EV and SUV, Cadillac Lyriq and Celestiq, Chevy Silverado electric pickup truck, and electric Chevy Equinox and Blazer SUVs.

Most of GM’s upcoming EVs, including a concept autonomous EV shown at CES, are featured in the 60-second spot. A longer 90-second version with more jokes and throwbacks will be available online after the shorter clip airs during the Rams-Bengals match-up.

Last year’s GM’s Super Bowl ad featured actor Will Ferrell taking on Norway as the world’s EV capital.

Pinkies up.
