George Lucas Was Concerned Baby Yoda Didn’t Have Jedi Training

Although it’s been well-established that George Lucas isn’t too involved in the day-to-day of Star Wars anymore, a new book indicates the filmmaker still has some input–and that Disney will listen to his creative suggestions. According to The Wrap, the new The Art of the Mandalorian: Season 2 book reveals that The Mandalorian executive producer Dave Filoni assured that Grogu, also known as Baby Yoda, got the schooling that Lucas insisted he should be receiving.

“I had a talk with George, at one point, about the Child,” said Filoni in the book. “His main concern was that the kid has to have a proper amount of training.”

Though the book apparently does not elaborate further, it’s assumed that Lucas meant Grogu should be shown having a journey with his Jedi skills so by the time he meets Luke Skywalker, he’s become the force master we all remember. While this wound up not yet popping up in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett wound up continuing some established plotlines–including Grogu’s development. In “Chapter Six” of the Boba Fett spin-off, we indeed see Grogu training with Luke–which likely was the result of Lucas’ input.

The Book of Boba Fett wrapped earlier this month–and while it was considered by many to be a disappointment, there is speculation the spin-off largely functioned to tee up new questions for Season 3 of The Mandalorian, which is currently in production. In the Star Wars franchise, Obi-Wan is up next with a slated release date of May 25.
