Are you okay with Google killing third-party call recording apps?

Google recently changed its Play Store policies that will effectively kill call recording apps starting May 11. These apps have been using Google’s Accessibility API to record calls since the company banned other ways of doing so with Android 10. Now, Google is taking away the ability to use the API for call recording purposes.

So what does this mean? Third-party call recording apps will not be able to function once Google implements and starts enforcing the policy change. You’ll still be able to record calls if your phone natively offers the feature. For instance, Google allows Pixel users to record calls via its phone app. Xiaomi’s Mi Dialler also supports the feature. However, if you’re using an app like Truecaller to record calls, you may no longer be able to do so starting May 11.

What do you think of Google’s move to restrict third-party apps from providing call recording services? Is it the right move for enhanced privacy? Or should it not be up to Google to decide who needs call recording and who doesn’t? Take our poll below and tell us what you think in the comments section.

Google is effectively killing third-party call recording apps on May 11. Do you support this?
